Don't forget about the "sunshine vitamin" this winter!
Vitamin D is often called the “sunshine vitamin”. After exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun, the body makes Vitamin D. Vitamin D plays a key role in preventing osteoporosis, calcium absorption, and immune health. A lack of Vitamin D in the body could potentially lead to an increased risk or certain cancers, type 1 diabetes, mental and physical fatigue, and depression.
Most people do not produce enough Vitamin D on their own during the winter months, specifically November – February. Using a vitamin D supplement during this time can help prevent a deficiency.
The Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine say that people over the age of 1 can safely tolerate 2,000IU of Vitamin D a day.*
